ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: GREAT BLUE HERON - HUNTING POSITION
A great blue heron stands gracefully on rocks surrounded by rushing water, its slender legs and long beak poised for action. The bird's feathers blend harmoniously with the hues of the flowing stream. Blue herons have a carnivorous diet that primarily includes fish, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and insects, which they hunt by wading in waters. Along the coast, they also feast on crustaceans and sea turtle hatchlings. Inland, especially in the winter, their diet expands to small mammals like squirrels, chipmunks, cottontail rabbits, and voles. They sometimes hunt small birds such as blackbirds, starlings, and swallows, and may even consume their eggs. These birds, known for their long necks and legs, prefer live prey and are capable of swallowing almost any small creature they catch.
