ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: MYSTIC RIVER BASCULE BRIDGE
On our recent trip to Mystic, Connecticut, we so enjoyed seeing the Mystic River Bascule Bridge. It was fascinating to see the drawbridge in action as it raised and lowered on a timely schedule to allow sailboats and yachts to pass. It is raised to allow boat traffic on a regular schedule from May 1st to October 31st at 40 minutes past the hour, otherwise on demand. Construction began on the span in 1919 and opened to the public in 1922. Seeing the drawbridge during our vacation was such a joyful experience! We were all so excited when the bridge began to lift, revealing the picturesque boats gliding underneath. The whole scene felt like something out of a storybook, with the charming town as our backdrop. We spent time just soaking in the historic atmosphere, snapping photos, and chatting with friendly locals.
